Imagine learning traditional Swahili woodcarving art in an idyllic island off the coast of Kenya. Where life is slow enough to get in touch with what is important to you. This apprenticeship option offers you a way to enjoy the island as well as leave with something truly meaningful within your skill set.
The apprenticeship is scheduled according to the moments and the days that you have available to you. You get to spend your days with me and truly immerse yourself into the craft to get to proficiency levels with woodcarving and handling tools for basic woodworking.
I ensure to work with you at a comfortable pace so as to ensure maximum uptake of the hands-on skills. There will be amazing projects to do, so as to hone your craftsmanship in traditional Swahili woodcarving.
You will get to spend your days with traditional woodcarvers and receive a unique opportunity to experience first hand, the goings-on of a traditional woodworker's life.
In addition to the basic 3 hour introductory lesson, I will take you on a tour of several woodcarving workshops. Here, you will be acquainted with other local woodcarvers and a tour to view local Lamu doors and acquaint yourself with their various designs and learn their histories. Additionally, if you are willing, I will show you how to use basic hand and power tools that would upskill you further in your journey.
The apprenticeships costs $250/week per person.
